Vicki Tri on December 14, 2014

Take a deep breath and stretch!! Feels amazing, doesn't it? strectching is such an important component in keeping your body in balance. When you workout, you're contracting your muscles. Stretching at the end of your workout pulls your muscles in the oppposite direction and not only feels great , but also sets your muscles up for optimal repair after being worked out.

Lets go on step further and make your regular workout a stretching workout..also known as yoga. Developed in India thousands of years ago, yoga has become an increasingly popular form of exercise in the United States. There are many different types, or schools , of yoga most sessions are typically comprised of breathing exercises, meditation and assuming postures that stretch and flex various muscle groups. The benefits of practicing yoga are endless. Here are a few:

  • Increased flexibility Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality weight reduction
  • Reduces stress prevents injuries..which is crucial for athletes mind and body connection increased concentraton and attention span.

There are so many different types of yoga practices, it is possible for anyone to start. Whether you're a couch potato or an athlete, size and fitness levels do not matter because there are modifications for every yoga pose. I am always amazed when I ask a high school athlete or an avid runner if they have tried yoga. Several times the response was, "that's not really a workout" or I cannot fit that into my training schedule . After some convincing and they did a class..wow..are they amazed. Yoga is crucial for athetes if they want to perform better and have less injuries or no injuries at all. Yoga is enjoyed by children which helps increase concentration and attention span.

That also beneifits the elderly. I teach this format to children at a private Christian school weekly and also do Chair Yoga at an assisted living. I see the results of practicing yoga and its can transform the mental, physcial , emotional abilities of people. Any one can do yoga regardless of physical limitations. One of my favorite quotes is from Tony Horton the P90X guru, "I can do what I do at my age not because of pull ups but because of yoga
